80/20 Rule Saves You During Holidays!

Don’t you just love the holidays? I do! I love the company, the parties, the gift giving, and of course the festive food and drinks. But how many of us kicked ourselves the week after on the amount of indulgence we allowed to take place? TODAY I want you to become very aware, from reading this post, that this year you can choose to live out this holiday season differently. I will keep it short and sweet as I know this time of year is crazy busy.

Let’s keep this very simple… stick to the 80/20 rule. What does that mean? That means 80% of the time you are making choices that you know are healthy for you. You are filling your appetizer plate with the vegetables and hummus, versus the cookies and sweets. You are checking in with yourself after the first helping at the dinner table to see if you really need seconds. You are drinking a full glass of water to every glass of alcohol you consume. You are focusing on the people, not the food. You are getting outside and moving your body on a walk. And you are getting enough sleep for goodness sakes!

I do believe that the holidays, and every day, are supposed to be fun and festive as well. I fully understand that this time of year might be the only time grandma makes your most favorite holiday rum cake. So… have some! But have some in moderation. That is where the 20% comes into play. 80% of the time you make the healthier choice, 20% of the time you have a bit more fun. It really doesn’t have to be difficult.

On that note, have a fabulous holiday season! Be present to what is the healthy choice for your body and enjoy!

Warmest wishes,
Kerry

What is Ayurveda and why should I care?

What is Ayurveda and why should I care? It is actually a great question and by the end of this post I know I will have peaked your interest. Ayurveda is loosely translated as “the knowledge of life” and it is a very comprehensive system of health care that focuses on bringing the body, mind, and spirit into balance. In India it is the traditional system of medicine. I was honored to study Ayurveda under the direction of an Indian doctor in Kerala about eight years ago and incorporate much of what I learned into my private holistic practice, as well as my personal daily routine.

Historically it is thought that Ayurveda was created around 5,000 years ago. At this time the belief system in India was that medicine and philosophy were closely intertwined. So, treatment decisions often are based on theory, plus a complete analyzation of the unique individual.

There are three different constitutions, or physiological factors,  that a person can be in Ayurveda- Vata, Pitta, or Kapha. These three states are called doshas. Depending on the individual, a mixture of two or three of these can be present in a person. When a person is out of balance physically, mentally, or spiritually, the doctor will recommend lifestyle remedies that can include exercise, diet, spiritual practices, bodywork, herbs, oils, and spices, to bring them back into balance. These recommendations are based on their dosha(s).

Knowing that my constitution is Pitta Vata, I have made it routine to incorporate appropriate practices to keep me balanced daily. For example, I often eat stewed apples or oatmeal in the morning, very good for a Pitta digestive system. Dahl, a mung bean and rice dish, is something I eat nearly daily. I always use ginger, turmeric, and fennel as these spices are great for my doshas. I get out and move my body regularly with yoga and walking to keep me calm. Not to mention I make sure to get a proper amount of sleep and meditate to keep my mind peaceful.

If you have questions on your dosha or things you should be doing to stay in balance, leave a comment! Would love to hear your feedback and questions.

Blessings,
Kerry

Hydration

One of the main questions I always ask a client is how much water are they drinking on a daily basis. The answer I usually get, “Probably not enough” or “I could always drink more.” Drinking clean water is a gift to our bodies. It is relatively inexpensive and can easily be integrated into one’s daily routine. Some of the rebuttals I come up across are “It’s just hard to get that much water down, it doesn’t taste like anything” or “I always seem to forget.” Keep it simple and enjoyable! Instead of plain water, perhaps put a citrus slice in it… lemon, lime, even orange. Or add a little bit of sugar free juice to give it a twist. The “I always seem to forget” solution is to simply make sure to have bottles in the places where you usually spend your time. It is a staple for me to have bottles at my office, where I work at home, in my bedroom, and an aluminum bottle in my car. Driving is actually one of the main places I drink my water. I am there anyways and it is not distracting, might as well.

How much water do you actually need? This seems to be an ongoing question. A good rule of thumb to go by is 8- 10 glasses. If you are a heavy exerciser and sweat quite a bit, I suggest more. There are many reasons to stay hydrated. Research as shown that drinking 5 glasses of water a day may decrease the chances of colon cancer by 45%. Additionally it reduces the likelihood to get bladder cancer by 50% and breast cancer by 79%.

Supplementation

Unfortunately, a good amount of our food these days is highly processed. And as they are mass-produced and sprayed with chemicals, much of the nutrients are lost. These nutrients are essential to our overall health. Turning to quality health supplements is a solution in regards to making sure you get the nutrients your body needs. It is important to note that a balanced diet cannot be replaced by supplements, but rather they should be used appropriately. There are a variety of reasons to use supplements besides aiding in a poor diet. Some examples for when they are helpful are before and after pregnancy, during times of heightened stress, to help physical performance, and assist weight loss.

Deciding if someone needs supplementation depends on the their specific situation. I always suggest that people do their own research in regards to their body’s needs. If you are concerned about contraindications with prescription medication, consult your physician.

aloe-veraFRESH TIP: Take vitamins and supplements with organic aloe juice versus water. Aloe is a better vehicle for absorption and allows supplements to stay in your body for twice as long, allowing you to leverage more of the benefits. Do not take prescription medications with aloe.
